GABA, also known as Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid, is an amino acid discovered in 1950. It contributes to motor control, vision and many other cortical functions. Often referred to as the “anxiety” amino acid, its primary purpose is to balance the brain by inhibiting over-excitement.

Over-stimulation in the brain can lead to restlessness, irritability, sleep disorders and even seizures.  Many neurological conditions are affected by GABA, such as Epilepsy, Insomnia, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s Diseases.

GABA supports brain and nerve metabolism, normalizes nervous system function and promotes a greater sense of relaxation and peace. GABA is an anti-stress, anti-uneasiness, calming and relaxing nutrient. It has been used clinically for depressed sex drive, prostate problems, pre-menstrual syndrome and as a non-addictive tranquilizer alternative.

GABA is good news for athletes, body builders and folks who want to lose weight.  Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid stimulates the pituitary gland which leads to higher levels of HGH (Human Growth Hormone). HGH is extremely anabolic (muscle building) and lipotropic (fat burning), which means that higher levels of HGH leads to less body fat and more lean muscle.  HGH even prevents the creation of fat cells.  Aging decreases HGH levels, so GABA supplementation may be highly beneficial, especially over the age of 40.

In our fast-paced world, GABA deficiency is quite common. Environmental toxins, stress and other factors can deplete our amino acids.  For example, the caffeine in coffee inhibits GABA release. The less GABA, the more nerve transmissions occur. The sensation of drinking too much coffee has a direct effect of having high glutamate production without enough GABA.  Meaning, over-stimulation of the brain and jittery anxiety.
