Natural Remedies for Psoriasis

28 Oct
Psoriasis is a painful medical condition that affects 7.5 million people with 150,000 new cases being reported each year.  Oftentimes, faulty signals in the immune system cause over-active skin-cell production.  The body does not shed these excess skin cells, so the cells pile up on the surface of the skin, causing lesions to form.
There are five types of psoriasis: plaque, guttate, pustular, inverse and erythrodermic.  Most cases are plaque (plak) psoriasis, also called “psoriasis vulgaris.”  Plaque psoriasis causes very sensitive, white, silver or red patches of scaly skin.  Common areas of complaint are the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back.
Besides the obvious painful skin inflammation, psoriasis can also affect the nails.  Yellow dis-coloring, pitting and ridges are some of the symptoms of psoriasis in the fingernails and/or toenails.  Careful attention should be paid, as nails pulling away from their nail bed is a symptom of psoriatic arthritis, a debilitating joint deterioration.
It’s very important to see your physician and a dermatologist for clear diagnosis for psoriasis.
Natural Remedies for Psoriasis:
Coconut Oil has been shown to bring relief to those suffering with psoriasis in as little as two weeks.  Some folks jump into this natural treatment by adding 2  to 3 tbs of raw coconut oil to their diet each day or taking coconut oil capsules.  However, you may simply test a patch of inflamed skin by gently rubbing coconut oil into the affected area.  Results vary, as some people respond better to ingesting the oil while others get the most relief by applying it topically.
Garlic is a powerful anti-biotic!  Doctors often prescribe broad-spectrum anti-biotics for any infection that may be the cause of psoriasis.  Being a food, garlic is safe to eat as well as easily obtained through capsule supplements you can find at your local health food store.  Also, garlic soothes inflammation so you may find that combining natural remedies brings even faster relief.
Turmeric is a powerful herb.  It’s the spice that makes common “curry” bright yellow.  When taken orally, not only does turmeric aid in blood purification and circulation, it is an anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory aid.  Turmeric also kills yeast-overgrowth in the body.  So if the particular psoriasis you are struggling with is caused by an over-active yeast condition, turmeric has proven to be an excellent herbal astringent to treat yeast infections.
