Are Bio-Identicals Right For You?

“The one-size-fits-all model may work for some people, but others — particularly menopausal women sensitive to even slight fluctuations in dosage strength — require individualized care.”  Dr. Jane Murray, MD

With all the risks of synthetic hormone use, the National Institutes of Health cut short a Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial in 2002 because Prempro4 was found to be associated with a significant increase in the relative risk of breast cancer as well as significant increases in the risk of heart attack, stroke and venous thrombosis.  Millions of women stopped taking their synthetic hormones, up to 70 percent according to one survey.  Hormone replacement therapy patients and physicians were shaken by the news and began to search for alternatives.

Bio-Identicals are a natural HTR (hormone replacement therapy) customized for your bodies specific needs.  As an alternative to synthetic hormones with their many potentially dangerous side effects, Bio-Identicals uses natural plant extracts like soy and yam.

In fact, “Wild Yam” is often used to bring balance to Progesterone, our stress hormone.  Progesterone is that fun hormone that when out of balance causes morning sickness, weight gain, anxiety and bloating.  Pregnant?  Even if you are not pregnant, Progesterone imbalance can create a kind of false-pregnancy which makes you feel a constant nausea, a need for large doses of sleep and directs your body to collect weight in the mid-region.

Generally speaking, as long as you are not pregnant, you could take an herbal supplement orally.  There are other natural hormone creams on the market, usually sold at health food stores or in chiropractor offices.  However, Bio-Identicals are a customized cream compound that you are directed to rub on your inner arms, thighs or torso once a day.  The difference being that each supply is based on your personal needs not just a generic amount of single herbs.

If you are curious about natural hormone replacement, ask your physician or seek a natural healthcare practitioner through a Bio-Identicals clinic or MedSpa.  There are also pharmacy compounding labs throughout Texas that may be able to administer hormonal testing through blood, urine and saliva analysis or refer you to a Bio-Identicals specialist in your area.

Regular monitoring by your physician and/or natural healthcare provider are necessary.  You will also need to be tested every 6 months to have your Bio-Identicals cream customized to your bodies current needs.

I’m curious what your thoughts are about Bio-Identicals.  Have you had success with them?  Where do you go to be treated, your local doctors office or a nutritionist?  Feel free to comment below or email me privately if you would like to remain anonymous.
