Meditation or Madness

15 Jul

buddha mugshot / online credit“.. meditation is not against action.

It is not that you have to escape from life.

It simply teaches you a new way of life:

You become the center of the cyclone.”  Osho

Conscious thought is the beginning of awareness; what moves us, what brings clarity, what gives hope.

In a world where madness is acceptable and meditation is questioned, it’s time we give some serious thought to our personal values.  It’s time to give importance to our true selves instead of holding back because of feeling outcast or unlovable to others.  You are perfect as you are.  You can do this.  If you survived the difficulty, you will survive the recovery.

Just be you.

Here are a few more of Osho’s thoughts on what meditation truly is..

“Your life goes on, it goes on really more intensely — with more joy, with more clarity, more vision, more creativity — yet you are aloof, just a watcher on the hills, simply seeing all that is happening around you.

You are not the doer, you are the watcher.

That’s the whole secret of meditation, that you become the watcher. Doing continues on its own level, there is no problem: chopping wood, drawing water from the well. You can do all small and big things; only one thing is not allowed and that is, your centering should not be lost.”

All Zipped Up

11 May

Zip Line Texas

Zip Lining?!

Sure, why not!

As a spiritual traveller, I’m up for most any adventure!

We came.  We saw.  We sorta.. conquered.  *laughs*

Before I get too far into the story, let’s start at the beginning.

We visited Zip Nac, a very well put together zipline park in Nacogdoches, Texas.  It was clean, neat, & charming.  More than anything, I noticed it was super-supervised.

We had a good time gettin’ all trussed up!  There was all sorts of protection gear & we had to take an instructional class.

During the class, we were trained carefully in safety precautions.  How to manage the metal lining; turning your body, slowing, & stopping.  I zipped a few times & had a difficult time maneuvering it all with my left wrist.  I’m pretty healthy & fit, so it was surprising how much I was tweaking my wrist just in the practice runs.  This could be potentially bad for my massage practice, as I need my hands & wrists in excellent condition at all times.

Between my friend’s short waist & short arms, her top harness threatened to displace ribs.  So we tried a few different options & finally concluded to skip it.

Sometimes in life, you think you want something until you actually get there.  True, we could have forced ourselves into going through with it.  Instead, we looked at our options & made the smartest choice we had at the time.  I saved my wrists & she saved her ribs.  Fortunately, we are both tuned in enough to listen to our bodies.

So I hope yall enjoy the zipping!  I may try again at another park that perhaps offers safer regulation on manual operation using your hands.  Or maybe I’ll stick to seated zipline rides.

For now, I feel like we’re the Heroines in our own journeys.  I’m so proud!  Knowing my limits makes my life more exciting because I know I can trust myself.. & that IS the spiritual journey I conquered.

WELL BEING: Secrets for Longevity

18 Mar

Bernardo LaPalloMeet Bernando LaPallo.

He is 110 years young!

LaPallo was born in Brazil on August 17, 1901 and is currently living in Mesa, AZ.

His father was the biggest influence on his life, encouraging him with wisdom on subjects of diet, exercise and spirituality.  In fact, his father was a well loved Doctor.  He taught his son to obey lovingly, based on the Bible’s only command with a promise.  “Children, be obedient to your parents” so that your days (life) will be long.  – Ephesians 6:1-3

These days, LaPallo believes in living in the moment.  He has many friends including Tina Turner and an active social life.

LaPallo genuinely believes in education and even sent all his children to school in Europe as he believes the education there is better all-around.  He is a voracious reader and loves to spend time solving crossword puzzles.

Besides the intellectual stimulation of words, LaPallo endeavors to see after his spirituality.  He is a firm believer in Christianity and shares his faith in every conversation.

For physical well being, he runs a mile every morning or goes for a walk.  He also preaches the necessity of getting your rest and eating well.

Paying extra close attention to his diet, he is mostly Vegan.  He swears by fruits and vegetables, preferring them organic and mostly raw.  LaPallo does not care for red meat but enjoys lamb on rare occasions.  In fact, he has a 46-year-old Granddaughter who looks more like a 20-year-old due to her Vegan diet.

Bernardo LaPallo attributes his health and longevity to natural foods and a variety of alternative health habits, including Reflexology.  He massages his own hands and feet with Olive oil.

Its good to message your feet in Olive oil, eventually you will have no corns or bunions and messaging your body in Olive oil will make your skin feel smooth.”

LaPallo touts the many benefits of water, saying “Water is the most powerful thing on earth..” and that water can be used in a positive way to heal our bodies.

Of all the healthy habits LaPallo practices, he lives faithfully according to 5 secrets his father taught him for healthy living.  Below are the 5 Secrets for Longevity, as shared by Bernando LaPallo.  Use these secrets in your daily menu for a long and healthy life.  Blessings!

WELL BEING: Bath Salts

4 Mar

In praise of the “soak“, let’s talk bathtub remedies.

Specialty bath stores thrive because of one thing, a good old-fashioned soak never goes out of style.

Too cold from a day outside?  Take a warm soothing bath to balance your temperature and soothe your aching bones.

Too hot from a long strenuous work-out?  Take a surprisingly uplifting ice bath to rehab those muscles and speed recovery.

Want to treat someone to a luxurious at-home spa day?  Just give them a lovely bath salts set and they will thank you for your great thoughtfulness.

Why, even men like a nice herbal bath once in a blue moon!  But we won’t tell.

Bath Salts are a wonderful addition to any bath.  They generally fall into 2 categories:  sea salts and Epsom salt.

The benefits of bath salts are far-reaching.  Beyond simply being relaxing for mind-body wellness, research reveals well founded health rewards including pain relief and psychological consonance.

  • increased peace of mind
  • physical and mental flexibility
  • stability and self-control
  • self-confidence
  • introspective thinking
  • mind-body rejuvenation
  • increased energy level
  • improved response to stress

  • skin hydration
  • skin tone and texture
  • skin cell growth
  • relieves Rheumatic disorders and arthritis
  • balances the central nervous system and peripheral nerve diseases
  • helpful for PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder)
  • gently healing to post-operative patients

There are a number of natural raw salts to choose from including Grey Salt, basic Sea Salt, Himalayan Pink Sea Salt and Dead Sea Salt.  Dead Sea Salts are specifically mineral rich, containing high amounts of calcium.

  • prevents artery hardening
  • improves the absorption of nutrients
  • flushes toxins from the body
  • eases migraine headaches
  • soothes muscle aches and spasms
  • restores Magnesium levels
  • lowers elevated blood pressure

Epsom Salt is pure Magnesium, so a soak in this salt will certainly help relieve any deficiency.  Magnesium plays a tremendous role in our over-all health and well being, regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, improving nerve and muscle function, easing our digestive process and reducing inflammation.

When shopping for bath salts, be sure to check the ingredients.  The last thing you want is a bunch of unpronounceable chemicals swirling around your healing bath.  Look for the type of salt, essential oils, and natural herbs.

Better yet, make your own!

Creating your very own bath salts allows you to mix and match scents and textures for your ideal bath experience.

Here are a couple of recipe’s.  Feel free to play with ingredients to make your ultimate soak, or whip some up in a lovely colored glass jar as a sweet gift for a friend.

  • 2 cups Epsom Salts
  • 1 cup Dead Sea Salt
  • 1/2 cup whole coriander seeds
  • 4 ounces (1/2 cup) Grapeseed oil
  • 2 ounces (1/4 cup) Avocado oil

  • 2 cups Epsom Salts
  • 1 cup Himalayan Rose Sea Salt
  • 1/2 cup dried tea rose petals
  • 1 T. Vitamin E
  • 3/4 cup Almond oil

Blend each mix together until smooth, breaking up any clumps and incorporating all the ingredients.  1/2 cup per bath is recommended.

A bath drain strainer will help catch the herbs at the end of your bath.  Also, make sure to have a bath mat down so as not to slip on the oils when exiting the bathtub.  Do not eat.  Be sure to put in a safe place away from the kids.

And of course, finish off the presentation by placing the fresh bath salts in the perfect His & Hers containers.

Happy soaking!

WELL BEING: Ear Candling

5 Feb

Ear Candles by Lynn Van Noy

“What is it?”

“How does it work?”

“Will it hurt?”

These are just a few of the questions I am regularly asked about Ear Candling.

Also called “Ear Coning” or “Thermal Auricular Therapy,”  Ear Candling is a soothing non-invasive natural therapy.   The gentle approach of Ear Candling dates back over 2,oo0 years to the ancient Egyptians, Tibetans, and Chinese.  American Indians are credited for developing and integrating this practice into an alternative to our modern-day Western medicine.   As the popularity of Ear Candling has grown, ear candles are now more readily available at health food stores and some pharmacies.

Even the name “ear candles” are a bit of a misnomer.  They are not solid wax candles, per se.  They are hollow, muslin cloth rolled up into a cylindrical cone and then lightly dipped into beeswax to hold their shape.  One end is tightly wound and small enough to slide into the entrance of the ear canal.  The other end is perforated and wider.  A trained professional, like myself, will administer safety precautions as the wide end of the candle is lit.

The theory is that as the smoke billows down into the ear canal, it creates a warm sensation, breaking down wax blockages and gently melting the wax, pulling it up into the ear candle.  My clients often say it is a pleasant and soothing experience.  All in all, Ear Candling is a relaxing, non-invasive complimentary therapy.

Benefits of Ear Candling

  • improves hearing
  • increases sense of smell
  • gently removes earwax
  • alleviates tinnitus
  • relieves allergies
  • soothes earache
  • improves mental clarity
  • balances ear fluids that may cause headaches
  • improves lymphatic circulation
  • alleviates ear infections
  • soothes sinusitis
  • relieves pain, fever, and dizziness associated with a ruptured eardrum

Being an old-time remedy means this particular therapy has had very little medical attention and not much to speak of in the way of official scientific research.  There are a lot of naysayers and equally as many who claim to get total relief from ear pain.  I personally have helped many who claim to have gone from extreme, even nauseating, pain to complete relief in one Ear Candling session.

After I perform Ear Candling, I like to follow-up with a gentle application of an herbal tincture to continue to soothe the ear long after the session is complete.

Keep in mind, the process of Ear Candling is a tricky business as it involves actual fire.  Some people prefer to DIY (do it yourself) or have a friend help administer the ear candle but this is extremely dangerous.  I suggest you seek out a professional, such as a Massage Therapist, Naturopath, or an Herbalist who can perform this procedure by following the appropriate Ear Candling instructions and safety precautions.

WELL BEING: Colonics

26 Jan

Water Spire ~ sharealike by likeablerodent

“Let’s talk colonics!” I said to a group of friends.

Only one person piped up to say, “Let’s not!”

The quiet consensus seemed to suggest that discussing the colon was either too taboo, the topic was not up for public discussion or some folks were simply unsure what to ask.

No worries.  You know me, I love to explore healing.  I knew then and there, I would find out more so as to shine a light on the subject in hopes of diminishing fear, confusion and discomfort.  Not to mention, I was super curious.

According to Ayurveda, the ancient medicine of India, there are only two major causes of illness: digestion or elimination.

If you are not digesting well, have acid reflux, or get sleepy, have hot flashes and nausea during or after a meal, you are definitely dealing with some form of digestive issue.  Be it a lack of digestive enzymes, a food allergy, or blood sugar imbalance.

However, if you find that your digestion is working well while your elimination is moving too quickly, too slowly, or painfully, then it is time to focus on cleansing the colon.  You may be inclined to take a stool softener or herbal cleanse but they tend to be rough on the digestive and eliminative systems, which means we need to find healthy and gentle options.

Colon Hydrotherapy was recorded as early as 1500 B.C., in an Egyptian medical document.  In this age of advanced medicine, getting a colonoscopy is a common practice.  So it only makes sense to take a fresh new look at colonics and move pro-actively towards more options, methods and information regarding the colon.

“And by all means, I prefer [that] my patients undergo colon hydrotherapy (a colonic) the morning of a colonoscopy.  It’s a safe way to cleanse the gut.”   Robert Charm, MD, Walnut Creek, California, board-certified as a gastroenterologist since 1972

A colonic involves Colon Hydrotherapy (water therapy) to cleanse the small intestine aka colon.   Just as our nasal passages can develop excess mucus, the colon can also develop a mucus-type sinus in reaction to inflammation.  If elimination is excessive or blocked, it’s time to cleanse the colon, removing toxins from your gastrointestinal tract that may cause a variety of health problems.

Colonic Irrigation is suggested as a remedy for:

  • asthma
  • headaches
  • arthritis
  • chest pain
  • hypertension
  • brittle hair
  • ADD
  • joint pains
  • psoriasis
  • allergies

For my part, I discovered a new non-invasive colonic called The Angel of Water® system.  It is the premier colon hydrotherapy system most sought out by hospitals around the world.  It’s advanced design is the height of simplicity, cleanliness and dignity.

Patricia Noble, owner of Rock Solid Health in Round Rock, Texas, educated me on how to use the system and offered as much personal support as I was comfortable with.  Being a gentle gravity-fed water system means 8 gallons of warm water are fed into your colon as slowly as your body dictates, making the entire process much less painful than the old way of forced water systems that could induce extreme cramping.  It was safe, simple and easy to use.  The whole session lasted about 45 minutes.  I felt fresh and light afterwards with no discomfort whatsoever.  Patricia also gave me an enzyme recovery drink to restore all my natural enzymes and minerals that may have been lost in the cleanse.

Keep in mind, colonics now require a prescription, so be sure to discuss your colon health with your physician before booking an appointment.

WELL BEING: Ho’oponopono

23 Aug
Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len

Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len

Several years ago, I was introduced to a Hawaiian meditation called Ho’oponopono.

My interest was piqued when a story surfaced about a Hawaiian therapist.  As the story goes, Dr. Ihaleakala Hew Len took a job working in a mental hospital filled with criminal violence.  The patients in this maximum security facility were extremely dangerous, heavily medicated and required shackles.  There was a regular turn-over of employees as the staff of doctors, nurses and handlers were afraid to go to work each day.

Dr. Hew Len refused to see a single patient.  As part of his job, he would sit in his office day after day, reviewing patient files while practicing this Hawaiian healing art called Ho’oponopono.

It was reported that after a few months of practicing this meditation, Dr. Hew Len’s patients were healing, behaving more peacefully and many who had no chance of ever being released were being freed.

What exactly is this ancient meditation practice?

Ho’oponopono is defined literally as hoʻo meaning “to” and Ponopono as “set to rights, put in order or shape, correct, revise, adjust, amend, regulate, arrange, rectify, tidy up, make orderly or neat.”  The Hawaiian Dictionary calls Ho’oponopono a “mental cleansing: family conferences in which relationships were set right through prayer, discussion, confession, repentance, and mutual restitution and forgiveness.”

How does this meditation work?

It is suggested that the pain and trouble we often see in others is simply a reflection of what is unwell within us.  By focusing compassionately on someone who is suffering and meditating on 4 specific powerful phrases, we are practicing Ho’oponopono.

What are the 4 life changing phrases that are the basis of Ho’oponopono?

  • I’m sorry.
  • Please forgive me.
  • Thank you.
  • I love you.

That’s right.  Dr. Hew Len would sit in his office each day looking over each individuals case file while repeating these phrases again and again.  He claims that by looking within and healing himself he was then able to affect others in a positive way, thereby healing his patients.

I’ve never met this Hawaiian doctor nor have I read any evidence that substantiates his claims but there has always been truth in compassion and the acceptance of self-responsibility.

In terms of illness as a society, be it physical, mental, spiritual or emotional; there are times when difficulties become unbearable and those are the times people most need to be loved, understood and accepted.  Even when we feel we are “in the right,” we too are part of society and that means we may be part of the solution.

Practicing this thoughtful meditation may be as easy as extending love to those we meet, appreciation to someone we pass in the street and an apology to a loved one when confusions arrise or we make a mistake.

The 4 phrases of Ho’oponopono may unlock the secrets we keep that can make us heart-sick as well as physically and emotionally unwell.  By taking personal responsibility and confessing our heart through words, thoughts, or even a written meditation, we can free ourselves and potentially free others by restoring dignity and good relationships.

Are Bio-Identicals Right For You?

natural hormone cream

“The one-size-fits-all model may work for some people, but others — particularly menopausal women sensitive to even slight fluctuations in dosage strength — require individualized care.”  Dr. Jane Murray, MD

With all the risks of synthetic hormone use, the National Institutes of Health cut short a Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) trial in 2002 because Prempro4 was found to be associated with a significant increase in the relative risk of breast cancer as well as significant increases in the risk of heart attack, stroke and venous thrombosis.  Millions of women stopped taking their synthetic hormones, up to 70 percent according to one survey.  Hormone replacement therapy patients and physicians were shaken by the news and began to search for alternatives.

Bio-Identicals are a natural HTR (hormone replacement therapy) customized for your bodies specific needs.  As an alternative to synthetic hormones with their many potentially dangerous side effects, Bio-Identicals uses natural plant extracts like soy and yam.

In fact, “Wild Yam” is often used to bring balance to Progesterone, our stress hormone.  Progesterone is that fun hormone that when out of balance causes morning sickness, weight gain, anxiety and bloating.  Pregnant?  Even if you are not pregnant, Progesterone imbalance can create a kind of false-pregnancy which makes you feel a constant nausea, a need for large doses of sleep and directs your body to collect weight in the mid-region.

Generally speaking, as long as you are not pregnant, you could take an herbal supplement orally.  There are other natural hormone creams on the market, usually sold at health food stores or in chiropractor offices.  However, Bio-Identicals are a customized cream compound that you are directed to rub on your inner arms, thighs or torso once a day.  The difference being that each supply is based on your personal needs not just a generic amount of single herbs.

If you are curious about natural hormone replacement, ask your physician or seek a natural healthcare practitioner through a Bio-Identicals clinic or MedSpa.  There are also pharmacy compounding labs throughout Texas that may be able to administer hormonal testing through blood, urine and saliva analysis or refer you to a Bio-Identicals specialist in your area.

Regular monitoring by your physician and/or natural healthcare provider are necessary.  You will also need to be tested every 6 months to have your Bio-Identicals cream customized to your bodies current needs.

I’m curious what your thoughts are about Bio-Identicals.  Have you had success with them?  Where do you go to be treated, your local doctors office or a nutritionist?  Feel free to comment below or email me privately if you would like to remain anonymous.  lynnvannoy@gmail.com

WELL BEING: Bio-Identicals

Weight gain.. hot flashes.. low libido.. oh my!

Any of these sound familiar?

If so, then you must have experienced the joys of waning hormones.

Over the years, many of my female clients have complained about the inevitable hormonal shifts and imbalances that are just part and parcel of menopause.

Even more frustrating is the idea that you may have to be on a medicinal hormone replacement “for the rest of your life.”  Not to mention all the horror stories that float around about hormone medicines made from female horse urine.

This eventuality has pushed some women to simply refuse taking an HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or to try to manage their hormones on their own for fear of discussing it with their physician.

Enough people have been affected to  create a wave of interest in other methods of hormonal balance.  So while we all have experiences with “pharmaceuticals” now there is a new world of healthy alternative medicines made from plant substances called “neutraceuticals.”

Bio-Identicals are a natural hormone replacement therapy customized to your bodies specific needs.  Using blood, urine and saliva analysis, natural health professionals are able to mix the precise about of herbs into a skin-safe cream to balance your hormones naturally.

And just when the guys thought it was safe to turn the page, Bio-Identicals makes hormonal balancing cream for men too.  It’s true.  Men have to deal with the difficulties of hormone imbalance in terms of bone loss, weight gain, moodiness and loss of sex drive.  A natural healthy complimentary therapy like Bio-Identicals may also be more attractive to men as a safe method of balancing their hormones without having to take pharmaceutical drugs with their many side-effects.
